Johnny Shines was born in Memphis, moved to Arkansas in the 1930s, and traveled and played with Robert Johnson up until a year before Johnson died. He also worked with Robert Lockwood Jr., Robert Johnson’s stepson. Shines’ style reflects both Robert Johnson and Robert Lockwood Jr., and his big powerful voice puts his own stamp on the music. Some of what I showed you in the “Jimmy Reed” lesson is also in this Johnny Shines lesson.
